Adoption Rules

Dear FooParent, please review these carefully before committing to adopting a FooPet:

FooPets Need Love

Your FooPet needs love and attention from you. Pet and play with it whenever you can, and not only will your FooPet be happier, but the bond between you and it will grow stronger over time.

FooPets are Real

Your FooPet is a real creature that lives online. It will have a date of birth and a lifespan of 10-20 years, depending on how well you take care of it. It will age and act differently over time.

Feed and Water Daily

Your FooPet needs to be fed and watered every 24 hours, at a bare minimum. Your friends or other FooPet members can help you feed and water your FooPet if you have to be away, but it is your responsibility to arrange proper care in your absence.

Bad Things Can Happen

Your FooPet, like a real puppy or kitten, is subject to various health problems, and if you do not follow the recommended care guide for it, it may not do well.

Consequences to Poor Care

Your FooPet cannot be "uninstalled" or "quit" - if you stop feeding and watering your FooPet, it will be taken to the FooShelter to get proper care. Please consider the responsiblities involved before adopting a FooPet.

Getting Started

I just adopted my FooPet, now what?

You will be given 5,000 FooGems. This initial 'getting started' fund can be used on pet food, supplies, medications, and many decorative items.

How do I give my FooPet water and food?

Click the water bottle icon in the menu dock. Water will automatically fill in the bowl and your pet will drink until satisfied. Next, click on the food bowl icon in the menu dock. Food will pour into the bowl and your pet will eat until satisfied.

How do I pet and rub my FooPet?

Click and hold your mouse on your pet's head, neck, and belly. There are some hidden sweet spots, so experiment!

How do I play with my FooPet?

Click on the toy icon in the menu dock, which will 'grey out' to let you know it has been activated and will play as soon as it is loaded.

Caring for FooPets

How often should I feed and water my FooPet?

You should feed your FooPet at least once every 24 hours. Note: Your FooPet will not want to play until properly fed.

What happens if I do not care for my pet every 24 hours?

After 5 days of no food or water, the FooSamaritan will care for your pet and send you a warning notification. (Make sure you accept email notifications in your Account Preferences). After three (3) consecutive feeding/waterings by the FooSamaritan, your pet will be repossessed and brought to the FooShelter's holding cell where it will continue to be cared for until you reclaim your pet. You have one week to reclaim your pet before the opportunity is opened up to other community members.

My Pet has been repossessed by the FooSamaritan. How do I get my pet back?

You have the opportunity to reclaim your pet, but it must be done within one (1) week of repossession. Once you pay a fine of either 5 FooDollars or 5,000 FooGems, your pet will be returned to you. Pay your fine by going to your Profile. Click on the link next to your caged pet and complete the transaction.

If one (1) week has passed since repossession, your pet can be adopted by other community members at market value (if it is a Featured pet, it will cost around 300 FooDollars, if it is a Shelter pet is will cost around 150 FooDollars). This opportunity will last for one (1) week. You can visit and potentially purchase other confiscated pets by visiting the owner's profile. These pets will be neutered by the FooSamaritan and unable to breed.

If the pet is unclaimed after two (2) weeks, it will be confiscated by the shelter and accessible from the adoption page by anyone.

I'm out of food, what do I do?

Use your FooDollars or FooGems to buy more food from the Shop. You will have unlimited supply of water.

How can I customize my FooPet's background and accessories?

Use FooDollars in the Shop to buy backgrounds, beds, pillows, houses and more for your FooPet. Then look for the "Decorate" button next to your pet on the Play view, which will take you to the 3D Scene Designer application

The Pet-Owner Bond

What is the pet-owner bond?

The pet-owner bond is a measure of the connection between a pet and its owner. Your bond with each pet is indicated by the bonding meter (the meter with a magnet icon). For every day that your pet is cared for (feed, water, play or pet) your bond with that pet will increase by 10%.

Once all of your pets bonding meters are filled to 100% you will unlock a bonding badge that will appear on your user profile (visible to everyone who visits your profile). For every day that you keep your pet meters filled you will add a point to your badge indicating the number of days that you have consistently cared for your pets.

For every day that you fail to care for a pet its individual bonding meter will drop by 10%. If any one of your pet's bonding meters drops to zero then your bonding badge will be taken away. You will have to get all of your pet bonding meters back up to 100% to regain the bonding badge (10 days of consecutive care).

If you know that you are going to be unable to care for a pet but you want to preserve your bonding badge status you can enter your pets into the FooKennel. The FooKennel will care for your pets while you are away. You will not earn additional points on your bonding badge but you will not lose the badge and your pets will stay healthy.

If someone else cares for my pets, will that affect our bond?

No, it will not. For you to maintain your bond with your pets, it must be you who interacts with them each day. You will not be penalized if others feed/water/play/pet your pets, but you must also participate. If you know that you are going to be away but want to preserve your bonding badge achievement please make arrangements with the FooKennel.

To get credit, do I have to care for my pet exactly every 24 hours?

It is safest if you aim to care for your pet on consistent 24 hour intervals, but there is a grace period built in. You can boost your Bonding Bar as soon as 18 hours or as late as 36 hours after the previous boost.

If I board my pet, will our bond stay strong?

Your bond will not be reset while boarding with the FooKennel, but it will not increase either.

How do I get a Bonding Badge on my profile?

A Bonding Badge will appear on your profile, just under your profile picture, if ALL of your pets have full Bonding Bars. The badge will disappear if any of your pets' Bonding Bars drop to 0%. Attaining this Bonding Badge is one of the highest distinctions a FooPet owner can have.

What does the number on the Bonding Badge mean?

When you first get a Bonding Badge, it will have the number 10, since that's the minimum number of days you must maintain consistent care of all your pets to get the Badge. There is no maximum number of days you can maintain the Badge, however, so we expect to see some dedicated members' Bonding Badge numbers go into the hundreds or even thousands of days.

If I adopt a pet, will that affect my Bonding Badge?

It will not. Newly adopted pets will not be factored into Bonding Badge qualification until you have owned them for 10 days.

How do I bond with newborn FooPets?

Newborn FooPets will not be factored into your pet-owner bond score.

Transferring FooPets to Shelter or a New Owner

How can I transfer one of my FooPets to a new owner?

On each of your pet's profile pages, you'll see a Transfer or Sell Pet link. Clicking that link will show you a form where you can set the selling price in FooDollars, and whether to make the sale public or not. If you choose to keep the sale private, you can use a secret URL to give to a buyer. Baby FooPets must be weaned before they're transferred.

I'm in a hurry, and unable or unwilling to take care of my FooPet. What should I do?

You can turn your FooPet back in to the Shelter.

Personality Profiles of FooPets

What are FooPet Personality Profiles?

Each FooPet has a Personality Profile value for each of 5 traits: Intelligence, Obedience, Bravery, Agility, and Endurance, and the Personality Profile displays each pet's values against a scale of that breed's min and max for each trait. Each breed has a "typical" value (for example, Pit Bulls have higher Bravery than Chihuahuas, and Jack Russells have higher Agility than Pugs) which influences the individual FooPets in that breed, but each individual FooPet can vary considerably from the breed norm.

How are personality values determined?

A pet's personality is inherited. When FooPet babies are born, they're assigned scores influenced by their FooPet mother, father, and breed. For example, if a Golden Retriever female with an intelligence of 150 and a Husky male with an intelligence of 140 are bred, the Golden puppies in the litter will be assigned an intelligence value distributed on a Gaussian curve centered on the average of the mother, the father, and the Golden Retriever breed intelligence norm (currently 120). So, the puppies will be spread bell-curve style from about 110 intelligence to 160 intelligence.

Why are Personality Profiles important?

By selectively breeding FooPets with high Personality Profile values, it will be possible to create genetic lines with greater intelligence (or obedience, or bravery, or agility, or endurance). Family trees and bloodlines will become more and more important over time. Currently, the Personality values have only small effects on game play on FooPets and in the Fooniverse, but we plan to incorporate the values more fully into future games and activities.

How do I increase personality values for my FooPet?

The values your FooPet is born with can be considered the "set-point" for him or her, but with care, training, and practice, he or she may perform better than the profile might suggest. In the future, it will be possible to raise certain values in a specific FooPet with training or experience, but the increases will not be passed on to offspring.

Purchase Restrictions

Why do some items in the Shop show a lock and a level number?

Some items are restricted for purchase from the Shop to only those users who have reached a certain StarPoint level. Users who have not reached this level can still buy this item used from another member or receive it as a gift.

Why do some items in the Shop indicate a Limit?

Some items have a limit to how many a user can buy new from the Shop. This is to prevent runaway scalping of rare and level-locked items. If an item has a purchase limit, underneath the price you will see a limit indicator showing the number that you have already bought new and the total number that you are allowed to buy new. The number that you have bought new is different than the number that you currently have. If you sell or gift this item, your total bought new will not go down. If you buy this item used from another user or are gifted the item, it will not count against your total bought.

StarPoints

What are the StarPoints levels?

Your level is based on persistent care and acts of kindness. The higher your StarPoints level, the more FooGems you will receive upon daily login. You will also unlock access to exclusive items in the Shop based on your numerical level.

How do I increase my StarPoints level?

Here are some of the ways to get more StarPoints:

  • Feed and water hungry and thirsty pets (10 StarPoints for each)
  • Invite a friend who then joins (100 StarPoints)
  • Pet a FooPet (3 StarPoints per pet, per day)
  • Play with a FooPet (5 for a disc or ball or mouse catch)

Are there limits to how many StarPoints I can earn in a day?

Yes. There is a limit of 10,000 StarPoints and/or FooGem points that you can earn in a day. There are a few activities that this limit does not apply to (Spay/Neuter Rewards, Forum Flagging Bonuses, and Fashion Show Rewards), but all other activities (Arcade Game Rewards, Pet Care Rewards, etc.) contribute towards this daily total. To see what your current daily point total is you can look at your ledger.

Can you lose StarPoints?

Yes. Your StarPoints will decrease for neglecting your pet and not giving it the proper care it needs.

FooPets must be at least 4 months old to be spayed or neutered.

Will I still receive breeding requests?

Those trying to send you breeding requests will see that your 'fixed' FooPet is not available for breeding.

Where do I go to Spay and Neuter?

Technical Troubles

When I click to play, I do not see my FooPet.

You may need the latest version of Adobe's free Flash player, which you can download at Adobe Flash Player. If you still have trouble after you install it, try closing and then reopening your browser. If you still have trouble, try clearing your browser's cache according to these instructions. Finally, try rebooting your computer as a last resort. If you still can't see your FooPet, you've got some kind of strange incompatibility with Flash or an extra-strong firewall or security setting, so you might try a different browser or different computer.

How can I make FooPets load faster?

The first time can be slow due high-res 3D graphics loading. Testing shows average initial load times of 20 seconds or so, depending on connection speed. The graphic files should get "cached" so that Foopets will load faster on returned visits.
